Hot Sauce Spot on Marble Table

by Valerie
(Maryland)

QUESTION:

Hot sauce was spilled and spotted that once dried has the table looking as if it's an ashy spot. Can I clean or will it need professional cleaning or is it damaged?

ANSWER:

What you have is etching from the acidic hot sauce. Etching is corrosion of the marble surface that eats away a bit of the marble leaving a dull and discolored spot.

Severe etching that is very rough and/or deep can require profession marble maintenance and restoration, but most etching from household spills on polished marble can be removed using SCP: Marble Polishing Paste, which is formulated just for this purpose and will restore the color and shine.

If the marble is honed (non-reflective, matte finish), then the above paste won't work and you'll have to follow the instructions in the Removing Etch Marks Manual.

I imagine your table has a shiny polished finish though, so the paste should do the trick for you and it's real easy to use.

Good Luck,
Ryan
