What Do You Seal Granite With?

by Lori
(Oregon)

QUESTION:

Lots of discussion about how to determine if you NEED to seal it--I know I do. But with what??

We have "Platinum" granite countertop in our bathroom. Water darkens it immediately, so I know I need to seal, but can't find any info as to what should be used.

ANSWER:

Sealing granite (or any stone) is done with the application of an impregnating sealer. Several companies sell granite sealers.

Sealers are liquids that are applied similarly to paint, but you MUST follow directions carefully especially about removing excess sealer prior to drying. If you fail to do so, you may get streaks and then have to strip the sealer and start over.

Since your countertop seems a bit porous, I'd recommend you use Stone Tech Bullet Proof. You can purchase this via our products page.

This is an excellent water-based sealer, so it has minimal fumes and much lower toxicity to you and the environment (which can be a big issue with solvent-based sealers).

Other quality sealers are:

511 Impregnator and MB-4.

You may want to apply two coats. That should take care of it for a few years, but if your granite is really porous (some are) then you may have to apply more often than "normal."

Good Luck,
Ryan
