Water Turns Marble Countertop Dark & Yellow

QUESTION:
I have a new bathroom vanity (double sink) with a marble counter top. It seems to turn darker just from water that gets on the counter from normal use. I can scrub it off with Bon Ami and dry it right away but this is really a lot of trouble and I won't notice every water spot (especially when it is someone else using the sink.) Around the faucets where water drips from hands it seems to get dark yellow spots. What can I seal the counter with to stop this?
ANSWER:
I'm not sure if you are saying that dark yellow spots remain after the water dries or if water on the surface makes the marble darker.
Water on anything will make the color darker. Water changes the reflectivity of the surface changing the appearance of the color... it's a physics thing and perfectly normal.
And the dark spots may remain for a while even after you've wiped away the water since some may absorb into the marble. Once it evaporates the "spot" will be gone.
You seem to be saying that wiping/cleaning the spots removes them, so nothing is staining... it's just water on the countertop that will remain until it dries or is wiped up like on any surface.
You also notice the "water spots" around the faucet (only around the faucet?) are dark yellow. This could be due to (1) minerals in your water, (2) possibly the sealant around the faucet or (3) if you have a white marble possibly from iron deposits in the marble rusting from constant contact with water.
The last two will leave yellow stains that you cannot clean or scrub away though.
Sealing will keep water from absorbing, but water on the surface will still make the marble darker until wiped away or it dries.
You need to
test your marble first to see if it even needs sealing.
If it does, I recommend
SenGuard or Stone Sentry Sealers.
