QUESTION:
Hello! I spilled vinegar on my marble countertop and now the polish has come completly off. The area that I spilled on looks very dull and is very soft to the touch. Do I need to re-polish or should I have it sealed? Thanks for your help! Logan
ANSWER:
Logan, couple things....
Use ONLY products safe for marble otherwise damage like this occurs. Today this is a bit more tricky, since many chemical companies are introducing their "marble cleaners" to serve a growing market. Some are fine, but many are still damaging and no good for cleaning marble.
Also, sealing has nothing to do with this issue.
The vinegar has "etched" the countertop. Etching occurs when acidic foods or harsh cleaning chemicals contact marble. The calcium carbonate in the marble is reactive with these.
The reaction corrodes the marble leaving a dull spot.
It may look or seem like a "stain," but it is not. A stain occurs when a substance is absorbed into the marble. In the case of etching, nothing is absorbed. In fact, a little marble is removed.
So, sealing isn't helpful marble maintenance for this issue.
The good news is that you should be able to restore the shine using
