Using Marble Polish on Honed Bathroom Countertops

QUESTION:
I recently had a honed white carrara marble slab installed as part of my bathroom vanity. It is not polished but is showing etch marks (or to me - water marks). How can I get the surface to appear smooth again?
I did apply a sealer right after it was installed, but I'm wondering if I didn't apply enough sealer. Before I "reapply" more sealer...I want to try and improve the smoothness of the honed marble surface.
Is the polishing paste ok to use on honed Marble? I think I read it should only be used on polished marble surfaces.
ANSWER:
Marble will etch from contact with acids and the wrong cleaning products whether it is polished, honed, tumbled or any other surface finish.
It's just that etching is much more noticeable on a polished surface because the spot is dull and the rest is shiny.
You are right that the
SCP: Marble Polishing Paste is designed for use on polished marble
On honed marble you'll get the best results by hiring a marble maintenance professional.
Although you may be able to get satisfactory results yourself if you want to give it a shot.
You'll find complete step-by-step instructions in the
Removing Etch Marks Manual.
And sealing has nothing to do with this issue. Sealing only helps prevent stains (substances absorbing into the marble). Etch marks are not stains... they are physical damage to the marble surface.
You must avoid contact with acidic foods and products and use only products made for cleaning marble.
Good Luck,
Ryan
