Urine Stain on Marble Floor

by Lynn
(Long Beach, CA)

QUESTION:

I have white marble, sealed but not shiny, on the floor of one of my bathrooms. Recently I noticed what appears to be urine spots around the toilet - I can't seem to remove them. Do you have a product that will work on this?

ANSWER:

If the marble is honed (not shiny) then a product won't work, but there is a solution to remove/repair the area.

What happened? The marble was "etched." Marble will etch (corrode) when exposed to acids (like urine) and can still stain even when sealed if the liquid is left on the surface long enough or if the seal job was not done properly or well.

You say the floor isn't shiny, so I take it that it is a "honed" finish which is best for the bath floor since less slippery. A honed finish typically doesn't show etching (dull rough spots) as much as polished marble does and they are easier to fix with honed marble.

What you need to figure out is if you have noticeable etching (a dull or lighter colored outline... maybe rougher than the surrounding marble) or a stain (is it yellow) or..... both etching and a stain (probably).

You'll need to remove the stain first and then repair the etching.

For polished marble MB-11 Marble Polishing Powder repairs etching very well, but a honed (not shiny) finish requires a different process. The MB-11 won't work on honed marble...this all just FYI.

Since your problem is a bit complex with probably both etching and a stain I'll have to refer you to our new "Cleaning Marble Secrets" maintenance manual.

It thoroughly explains your exact situation, with step-by-step instructions how to repair it. You can complete the procedure easily enough and for very little cost, but it takes some explaining.

Once resolved, you should consider re-sealing (if needed) the area around the toilet. It won't help with etching, but it would with staining of course.

Cleaning Marble Secrets covers sealing as well. In fact, the manual covers everything you should know, do and not do over the life of the marble. It will help you solve this problem and any other you should ever encounter.

Good Luck,
Ryan
