Urine Stain on Marble Around Toilet

by Magda
(Brooklyn, NYC)

QUESTION:

Hi, I have noticed that over the last two years my boys have destroyed the marble around their toilet. The entire bottom has a yellowish two tone ring. Is there a way to get rid of it and then seal the surface? What do I do? Thanks!

ANSWER:

Urine is acidic and marble is sensitive to acids. Acids cause etching, which is corrosion of the marble that creates dull and light colored spots or marks.

So, you almost certainly have etching. Sounds like you also have yellow staining from the urine absorbing into the marble.

Cleaning marble stains and etching requires a couple different procedures, but you can do it yourself.

The procedure for etching will depend on whether your marble is honed or polished.

You'll find complete information on how to fix both of these problems (stains, etching) along with everything you need to know about sealing, marble maintenance, product recommendations, etc. in our Cleaning Marble Secrets Guide.

We do have other marble maintenance guides specifically for stains, etching, sealing, etc., but the "Secrets" guide includes all those and more, so it's a better value.

And all the DIY procedures are low-cost too, so it shouldn't take you too much effort or money to get the marble looking good again.

Once you get it cleaned up, you can seal it (again complete instruction in the guide) to guard against staining, but sealing will not guard against etching.

You also want to make sure your toilet doesn't have a small leak that may be soaking into the marble, but most likely it is from the boys.

But you're probably used to that by now!

Good Luck,
Ryan

I highly recommend Stone Care Pro Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but found Stone Care Pro is the most reliable and effective and cheaper too!
