Tumbled Marble Shower Mildew

QUESTION:

What can i use to clean mildew stains from tumbled marble?

ANSWER:

Glad you asked before just trying something because nearly all common and brand-name cleaners are too harsh for cleaning marble.
This is especially true of bath and shower cleaners.

So, for cleaning marble shower mildew you want to use a product made specifically safe for marble cleaning like the Bathroom Mold & Mildew Remover we recommend at the Stone Care Center (click here).

All products we recommend are those we've found to be most effective and the best value.

The mildew remover is excellent, but to keep the problem from recurring you probably need to clean your shower more frequenlty and also ensure sufficient ventilation so the shower dries out completely between uses.

You'll find an "all purpose" stone cleaner at the Stone Care Center as well, or you may be interested in a kit like the Bath & Shower Kit that provides the most useful products for particular projects or common granite & marble cleaning issues.

If the problem persists even with regular cleaning, then the most likely explanation is that you are getting water trapped behind the tiles, which can result in chronic shower mold and mildew.

To fix this problem let the shower dry out for a few days, then inspect and repair any voids or cracks in the grout.

Sometimes a shower is just poorly / improperly installed allowing water to get behind the tiles. In such cases the shower must be torn out and re-installed. Hopefully yours just needs a bit of extra cleaning!

Good Luck,
Ryan

tumbled marble stained from shower cleaner
by: Tamera Frank

I had the mildew problem and used Lysol tub and tile cleaner. Now, I have white places all over my tumbled marble shower. How can I get these off and keep it looking new, or is it too late?

Thanks!

===Answer:

You have etched your marble. This is corrosive damage from using the wrong cleaning products, which is nearly every common and brand-name cleaner.

Use only products safe for cleaning marble in the future.

And no it's not too late. Etch marks can be repaired, but the method depends on the type of surface (polished, honed, tumbled) you have and the severity of damage.

You'll find complete details and instructions in the Removing Etch Marks e-book.

Good Luck,
Ryan
