Sealing Tumbled Green Marble

QUESTION:
We are going to cover our kitchen island with light green tumbled marble.
We understand it should have a sealer applied to protect it.
We have some sealer we used on the front porch to protect the stone (flagstone) and it turned it yellow. What should we put on the marble? Thanks, appreciate any help you can give me.
ANSWER:
First, as with any stone, you should
test the marble to determine if indeed it needs sealing.
Most likely it will with a tumbled surface, but testing is the proper way to determine exactly what you should do or not do because some stone should
not be sealed.
Second, you should consider that marble etches upon contact with acids like coffee, soda, juice, lemons, tomatoes, etc. Etching will leave dull and/or lighter spots.
For this reason, marble is not recommended for the kitchen. Now, a tumbled finish will not show etching nearly as much as a polished, but it still may be noticeable.
However, some green marbles do
not etch. I'd recommend you test for etching as well on a sample, so you know exactly what you are dealing with. Sealing does not protect against etching.
If testing shows it should be sealed, then I recommend
STONE SENTRY or SenGuard Sealers. Excellent products and they won't yellow.
Good Luck,
Ryan
