Sealing Marble: Determining If Marble Needs Sealing
QUESTION:
We just installed a marble vanity top. How do we know if it has to be sealed?
ANSWER:
Determining if sealing marble is necessary is very easy.
First, if it is polished (shiny) then it most likely won't need sealing. When polished marble is almost non-absorbent, very stain-resistant and often
cannot be sealed... the marble sealer simply won't absorb.
But, all you ever have to do with marble or any stone is to
water test the surface to see whether or not it needs to be sealed.
If testing shows you should seal it then I recommend using
SenGuard or Stone Sentry Sealers.
If not, then you are good to go!
However, remember that marble will etch upon contact with acidic foods, drinks and some bath products. Etching is a chemical burn that leaves a dull and discolored spot.
So, best to store any products on a decorative tray or shelf and not on the marble surface.
And use only
products safe for cleaning marble since most common household and brand-name cleaners will also etch marble.
Etching can be repaired using
SCP: Marble Polishing Paste, but you can easily avoid etch marks in the bathroom, so learning to practice a bit of prevention is the best method.
Good Luck,
Ryan
