Sealer Streaks On Porcelain Tile

QUESTION:

We used a 511 seal/enhancer for dark brown porcelain tile. We wiped it off...but it still dried with streaks. I've read that we can "re-activate" it by wiping on more seal/enhance and buffing it off until it's very dry...one tile at a time. What do you recommend? Will this work? Do we need to strip it off and start over?

ANSWER:

Porcelain is usually pretty dense/non-porous and often does not need sealing unless polished. (Which is the opposite case than marble)

So, you may have applied a sealer when none was needed since you stated that you wiped it off before drying which is very important.

You can try the "re-activation" method. May not work if the sealer is now cured, but try and see.

If it doesn't work, use methylene chloride to strip.

If you'd like complete info on sealing and removing sealers, then check out the All About Sealing manual.

Good Luck,
Ryan

Porcelain non-porous?
by: Ryan

David is essentially right. Most porcelain does not need sealing, however...

Porcelain actually is porous and can stain, but since porcelain is very dense it is very difficult to stain and practically speaking stain-proof.

So true, most porcelain does not need sealing. However, polishing porcelain opens the pores more increasing the possibility of staining and therefore could benefit from sealing.

All you have to do to definitively answer the question is to test it.

Porcelain Tile
by: David Ragazzo

Porcelain tile is non-pourous. There is no need to seal it at all. You can actually install it outside because it is frost resistant as well.
