Re-Sealing Honed Absolute Black Granite
QUESTION:
We've had our absolute black honed granite countertops for about 5 years. They were sealed upon installation. I read that granite should be resealed every 3-5 years. Is there a specific product or technique I should use for honed granite?
ANSWER:
Re- sealing granite countertops should be done when it is necessary and not at some arbitrary point in time. Yes, you read and hear the 3-5 year suggestion, but that is just to give a rough idea about when it should be considered.
However, every stone is different. Some are more porous than others and require re-sealing more often, while others never need sealing in the first place.
And with advanced technology granite sealers that form permanent bonds like
SenGuard Marble & Granite Sealer hitting the market you likely will never have to re-seal.
With all that said all you need to do is
water test your granite to determine if and when it needs re-sealing.
Again, the 3-5 year suggestion comes mostly from granite sealer manufacturers that try to convince you that every single stone must be sealed and re-sealed often.
In truth that requirement is very general and does not apply to every stone type or variety.
And Absolute Black granite is very dense. Usually does not need sealing. However, it may take a sealer when honed.
So, test it. If testing shows it needs to be re-sealed then I recommend using
SenGuard or Stone Sentry Sealers.
Good Luck,
Ryan
