Removing Polished Marble
Cup Rings

by Carolyn
(Lewiston, NY)

QUESTION:

I have a polished marble coffee table with cup rings on it. I already tried dish soap on a hot rag. How do I clean it?

ANSWER:

The cup rings are "etch" marks. Marble is made of calcium carbonate, which reacts with acidic foods and drinks.

What happens is the acidic substance corrodes or eats into the marble. The severity of the etch mark can vary, but typically it'll be dull, possibly discolored and if really severe, rough to the touch.

So, the "cup ring" is not a "stain" to be cleaned. It is physical damage to the marble that must be repaired. Luckily you can do this yourself.

Use MB-11 Polishing Powder to remove/repair. It's a simple process. Just follow the directions on the bottle.

If you are interested in learning more about how to clean marble the right way along with solutions to all types of damage check out our new Cleaning Marble Secrets Guide.

Once you remove the marks, be sure to always use coasters to prevent future etching.

Good Luck,
Ryan
