Removing Marble Wax

by Joanna Etzel
(Easton, Md, USA)

QUESTION:

Years ago I acquired a beautiful table in Brazil set with the indigenous stones mined there. I have been using a product called "Italian Craftsman Polish" on the tabletop for many years. The label claims it contains no wax. What is the safest way I can clean the table to avoid further polish build up?

ANSWER:

Acetone will safely remove the wax. Wet the surface with acetone and let sit for a few minutes then wipe off with paper towels. However, are the stones set with glue? If so, the acetone could potentially affect the glue too.

Alternatively, Soap Scum / Hard Water Remover (under "bath & shower") is a heavy duty cleaner for marble and other stone that wouldn't affect glue and will be much easier to work with too. Spray on, gently scrub with soft brush and wipe up.

For future care, I'd simply recommend using Granite Countertop & Marble Cleaning spray once a week. Of course, always use coasters and don't let any acidic foods or drinks contact the surface. Also, you may consider using Topical Polish/Shine Enhancer every couple months to add a bit of non-wax protection and shine.

Good Luck,
Ryan
