Removing Discolored Spots From White Marble

by Mark

QUESTION:

We have white (Thassos White) flooring in our bathroom. There are a few discolored stains in a few of the squares of marble and we simply can't seem to get them out of the marble. It might be hair color - though the discoloration is a light gray color - or some other liquid substance. Any suggestions?

ANSWER:

There are two types of spots that can occur on marble. One is a true "stain" where a substance absorbs into the marble creating a darker spot.

The other type, called "etching" occurs when a damaging (acidic or alkaline) food, drink or product contacts the marble.

Marble is sensitive to such products, which will corrode the marble leaving a dull and often lighter colored spot.

You have to know which you have because the solutions are completely different. But also be aware that a substance can both stain and etch in the same spot.

If that is the case then you'd have a dull darker spot and you'd need to remove the "stain" first and then repair the etching.

To remove stains follow the instructions in the Removing Marble Stains ebook.

The procedure for removing etch marks depends on the surface type...

Polished (shiny) marble etch marks can be quickly removed and the shine/color restored using SCP: Marble Polishing Paste designed just for this.

On honed (matte) marble there aren't any products that you can apply, so again you'll have to follow the procedure outlined in the Removing Etch Marks ebook.

Instead of the above two ebooks you may consider the Cleaning Marble Secrets ebook guide, which contains all the info provided in the other ebooks plus everything else you need to know for properly cleaning marble, protecting marble and marble maintenance including all kinds of simple DIY solutions to problems and advice on how to avoid them.

Good Luck,
Ryan
