Remove Water Rings & Stains On Old Marble Table

QUESTION:

how do i remove water rings and unknown stains on my round marble coffee table approx 50 yrs old? have trie 409,wndex,water and viniger baking soda and viniger

ANSWER:

Well, you certainly cannot remove stains or do anything beneficial to marble with 409, windex, vinegar or most other common household cleaners.

Just like you treat silk differently than cotton and wood differently than carpet, there are certain things to know about marble... a right way and a wrong way to clean marble.

All the products you named and used should NEVER be used on marble because they are acidic and will damage and etch marble.

You should use only products safe for cleaning marble.

Etching is chemical corrosion that eats away the marble. It's very noticeable on polished marble because such cleaners leave dull spots.

On honed marble damage from common cleaners is not so noticeable because the marble finish is already somewhat dull.

I'm assuming since the table is old, that it has a honed finish. You would have noticed a dramatic difference in the appearance of the marble from chemical damage if it were polished.

The "water rings" are also etch marks from acidic drinks set on the table.

Stains are different than etch marks. Etching causes light-colored spots.

Stains cause dark-colored spots because something has absorbed into the marble.

On polished marble etch marks can be removed using SCP: Marble Polishing Paste, which is made specifically for etching and marble maintenance.

However, on honed (non-shiny) marble you'll have to follow the instructions in the Removing Etch Marks ebook.

You also have stains. As noted stains occur when a substance absorbs into the marble, thus normal cleaning methods cannot remove the stains.

The only way to reliably remove all types of marble stains involves a process that varies depending on what caused the stain, but it's cheap and easy.

Complete details and instructions are provided in the Removing Marble Stains ebook.

Good Luck,
Ryan

I highly recommend Stone Care Pro Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but found Stone Care Pro is the most reliable and effective and cheaper too!
