Problem Sealing Honed Absolute Black Granite Floor
QUESTION:
Our installer sealed our honed absolute black granite floor with 511 by Miracle. The sealant left a residue that appears uneven and smeared. He tested reapplying the sealant to remove the residue and Residue Remover from Miracle, both recommended by Miracle, and neither works. The company also recommends mineral spirits, which also does not work. What do you suggest? Eugene
ANSWER:
Well, first the installer ought to have known that absolute black even when honed does not need nor will it absorb a sealer in all but the rarest cases.
So, attempting to apply a granite sealer was the first mistake. The second was that he obviously didn't completely remove all residue from the surface before the sealer dried, which is the most critical step.
Both mistakes are really inexcusable since all it takes is a simple
water test to determine when and if a stone needs to be sealed.
Also, this is floor tile... he could easily have test sealed a sample tile to see the results.
The only other suggestion I can make besides what you have already tried is to use methylene chloride (usually found in paint strippers) to strip the granite sealer off the floor.
This is the most potent solvent and is the last resort for stripping. If this doesn't get it off, then the fabricator/installer is on the hook for re-surfacing and re-honing the floor to remove the sealer from the surface.
Good Luck,
Ryan
