Pet Urine Stain on Marble Hearth

QUESTION:

I have a solid floor level hearth in front of my gas fireplace. My dog actually urinated on a basket that was sitting on the marble. We lifted up the basket and discovered a stain from the urine. What can I use to remove this stain. The marble is a off white color, and has not grout. It is a solid floor level piece of marble. Thanks.

ANSWER:

Most likely two things have occurred from the dog urine to damage and stain marble.

First, the urine is acidic. Acids will corrode marble, which damages the surface leaving dull and sometimes lighter-colored spots... it's called "etching".

Second, after etching the marble the urine along with any dye in the basket soaked into the marble floor causing a stain.

If the spot is not darker or a yellow-brown from the urine/basket, then you may not have a stain... but if so, then you need to remove the stain first and then deal with the etching.

Removing marble stains cannot be done using traditional spray on and scrub cleaning methods. Since the substance has absorbed into the marble below the surface, typical cleaning won't touch it.

However, most stains can be completely removed from marble unless very old or deep, which yours is not.

To repair the etching on polished marble use SCP: Marble Polishing Paste that is a specialized product made just for etching.

If the marble is honed (matte finish) then the paste won't work and you'll have to follow the instructions in the Removing Etch Marks ebook.
