Marble Vanity Top Stains/Roughness

QUESTION:
We have just put in marble counters in the bathroom. There seems to be stains that look like water spots. We use a foam soap for handwashing but it is not just in this area. Can you tell us what to use. It feels rough till we used a granite cleaner and polish. After using this the stain is still there but it is not gritty as it was before using.
ANSWER:
Sandie, the problem you are having is called "etching." It is not a stain. Nothing is absorbed into the marble.
Marble is different than granite. Marble is sensitive to acidic foods and products. Some bath products can be acidic, perfume will often do it, using the wrong cleaner, etc.
The acids eat into the marble, damaging the shiny polish causing dull, light spots and exposing raw rough marble if severe enough.
You'll need to use a special polishing compound like
MB-11 Marble Polishing Powder to remove the marks.
Unfortunately there's a lot of confusion and conflicting advice given about marble maintenance. Many marble salespeople and installers neglect to tell their customers anything about how to properly care for marble and too often what they do tell is wrong.
I'd suggest you check out our
Marble Maintenance Manuals so you can learn how to properly clean and maintain your new marble and avoid future problems.
Good Luck,
