Marble Vanity Top Film

by Eli
(Albuquerque)

QUESTION:

I have a marble vanity top with a "dull film" on it. How do I get this off to its original luster?

ANSWER:

You may have a "film" on your marble vanity if you regularly use a soapy type cleaner. Soap will build up on marble creating a dull film.

If that is the case, then cleaning the marble countertop with acetone (buy from the hardware store--don't use fingernail polish) should remove the film revealing the shiny polish beneath.

However, it is also quite likely that it has been cleaned with the wrong products. Typical household and bath cleaning products that you buy at the grocery, etc. will damage and dull marble.

So will things like bleach, ammonia and vinegar.

So, if after cleaning with acetone the marble still looks dull then you have etched the marble.

To make it shiny again, you'll need to hire a marble restoration professional. The shine is not from some spray or coating. It requires grinding with diamond abrasives by a pro to make marble shiny.

If you only have a dull spot here and there or the vanity is very small then you could try a good polishing powder like MB-11.

MB-11 will work well for small areas of mild etching, but for severe damage or large areas hiring a pro will yield the best results.

Good Luck,
Ryan
