Marble Table Top Film

QUESTION:
I do not know the name of the marble - it is multi-color brown and was purchased from a furniture store that knows nothing about their product - that's why I am writing to you.
The top of the table is shiny (glossy) but I have noticed in the past 2 weeks that there appears to be a film developing along the edges of the table - the center of the table remains shiny. I only purchased the table one month ago. I use place mats or tablecloth when eating on the table and clean it only with water and soft sponge-not even soap.
I purchased a marble cleaner from Home Depot but it has done nothing. The company can't even tell me if the marble is treated (sealed).
My question is why is this film/dullness happening and what can I do about it? Thanks in advance for your advice since I can't get anywhere with the company who sold the table to me!
ANSWER:
First, it's very odd to get a film or dullness only around the edges. On an old table the edges could be more dull from use wearing away the polished layer, but your table is new.
You indicate that you have protected the table well and haven't used any potentially harmful cleaners on it and I'd expect damage all over if you had used the wrong cleaning products.
I'm afraid I don't have an answer either, since nothing in your question indicates what the cause of the problem might be.
Whether or not the marble was sealed is not an issue since sealing only prevent stains and has no affect on any other aspect of marble maintenance.
Is the film/dullness consistent around the entire edge of the table or just in one particular spot?
The only suggestion I have is to use
SCP: Marble Polishing Paste, which is specifically designed to restore the shine and color to marble that has been lightly etched or worn and looks "dull."
If you'd like to take a picture and submit it with another question, that may help, but the paste may do the trick.
Good Luck,
Ryan
