Marble Sink Stain

by Christy
(Wichita Falls, TX)

QUESTION:

My marble sink area by the drain looks a little bit discolored and dirty, how can this area be cleaned or at least polished to look better. Color is a light beige color, name? I had it installed in 1986.

ANSWER:

Just to clarify... you are indeed talking about a marble sink and not a "cultured" marble sink that is an integral part of an entire molded countertop.

"Cultured marble" is not really marble. It is marble dust molded into shape and coated with a plastic shell. Cleaning and maintenance are significantly different than for true marble.

So... you have a real marble sink that is discolored.

Stop up the drain and fill the sink with hydrogen peroxide (buy at a beauty supply store or online) just enough to cover the dirty drain area. Let is soak over night.

Use an old toothbrush to scrub the area and rinse clean.

If this doesn't clean it, then you'll have to follow the instructions provided by the Removing Granite & Marble Stains e-book.

If it's cultured marble then you may have worn through the protective coating and stained the base. That stain would probably require professional restoration.

Let us know how it goes and ...

Good Luck,
Ryan
