Marble Patio Stains
QUESTION:
I had a patio put in 2 weeks ago. They got grout on the marble and decided to get it off with a acid wash. He used a roasting pan as a container to hold the acid wash. He put it on the patio as he applied it. Later he put a sealer on it because it took all the natural shine off the marble. Now about 4 days later my patio had rust stains all over it.
The marble and the grout is all rust marked. Please help! Now he wants to remove the sealer to get to the grout and marble but I afraid of this getting even more ruined or porous or worst if happening all over again.
ANSWER:
Wow! What a disaster. I think at this point, I'd want to hire a marble restoration professional to come out and resurface the whole patio.
This guy doesn't have a clue. Sealing has nothing to do with the polish and didn't know that acid would etch (dull) the marble?
Hopefully you haven't paid this guy anything yet and you can deduct the cost of the restoration pro from the installer's bill.
Rust is hard to get out. You need to poultice each and every spot. If they are all over, resurfacing makes more sense.
Also, unless this patio is covered from rain, I wouldn't put a polish on it... it will just wear off from use and weather and always need re-polishing.
Just have it honed and don't bother sealing it. Typically it's not a good idea to seal stone in a wet/exterior environment.
Except for rust stains, any food or drink stain that may occur can be easily poulticed up or just let the sun and rain bleach it out.
Good Luck,
Ryan
