Marble Fireplace Cleaning

by Nancy
(North Carolina)

QUESTION:

The marble around my gas log fireplace has darkened apparently from the fire/heat. I have used Ivory soap and water and gotten some brownish stuff off, but I doubt seriously that it all came off. Should I simply go to a marble place (like the kind of place that makes gravestones???) and get a cleaner?

ANSWER:

Is the marble polished (shiny) or honed (matte finish)?

If it is honed, then I'd use a mild bleach solution (1/2 ounce bleach in 16 oz. spray bottle) and a soft-bristle brush.

If it is polished, then use Bathroom MOLD & MILDEW Remover.

For either one, just spray on, wipe around an let soak. Then go back, spray a bit more and scrub.

Regular Cleaning

Once you have the marble fireplace all cleaned up, don't let the it get dirty again obviously and use Granite Countertop & Marble Cleaning spray once a week or as needed.

If you like, you can start by trying Granite Countertop & Marble Cleaning spray to clean the marble, but it is not formulated for heavy duty jobs like Bathroom MOLD & MILDEW Remover.

Do NOT use the bleach for regular cleaning. Even with a honed surface regular use of bleach will etch the stone causing spots and discoloration.

Good Luck,
Ryan
