Marble Durability & Stain Resistance
QUESTION:
How durable and stain resistant are marble countertops?
ANSWER:
Well, that question is answered on several pages of this website and it depends on what you are comparing it to.
But here's a quick rundown...
Since granite and quartz countertops are the all-around best performers, that's what I'll compare marble to.
Contrary to popular belief and what you often read online, marble is
not very absorbent and does not stain easy especially when polished.
This varies of course depending on the color/variety of marble, but many are more stain resistant than granite.
Marble does etch (corrosion from acids) easily though unlike granite and so does not make a good surface for the kitchen. People often mistake etching for "staining," which is why marble is often said, erroneously, to stain easy.
Marble is softer than granite and will scratch more easily. Another good reason not to put marble in the kitchen.
Marble will stand up to heat fairly well, but not as well as granite.
Unless you pick a very porous granite, marble will typically require a bit more maintenance than granite. But this is also dependent on where you install the marble.
Like granite, damage can be repaired fairly easily in most cases.
Hope that helps. If you take some time to look around you'll find tons of information regarding the selection, installation and maintenance of all stone.
Good Luck,
Ryan
