Marble Countertop Flat Iron Burn
by TG
(Gilbert, AZ)
QUESTION:
Can you tell me how to remove burn marks on my Marble bathroom countertop left by a flat iron? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, TG
ANSWER:
The best advice for removing burns from stone is to hire a marble maintenance professional to resurface the area.
This will yield the best overall results so you can't tell any damage ever occurred.
However, you can try it yourself if you are willing to accept that you may not get it perfect. You can remove the burn, but you may still have a noticeable blemish.... it may be very faint, but potentially noticeable.
What you'll need to do varies and depends on whether you have polished or honed marble.
You'll find complete step-by-step instructions in the
Removing Stains Manual.
And of course you need to be sure you are dealing with real marble and not cultured marble, which is more easily and commonly burned.
Cultured marble looks a bit like marble, but it is basically a plastic. If under the cabinets the countertop is a dull gray, you have a continuous built in sink and if you can see the edge of a coating under the edges then you have cultured marble.
Once the protective gel coat on cultured marble is damaged by a burn it is difficult (almost impossible) to repair it without an obvious blemish. It's just a different animal than real marble and cleaning marble is our expertise... not cultured marble.
But if you have real marble, the manual will teach you exactly how to fix it.
Good Luck,
Ryan
