Marble Countertop Curling Iron Burn

by Vickie
(NY)

QUESTION:

How can you clean/remove a curling iron burn from a marble bathroom counter top?

ANSWER:

Most often when someone asks about a burn in their "marble" it is usually "cultured" marble and not actual marble.

Cultured Marble is made from ground marble formed into molds and coated with an epoxy/plastic surface. It is made to "look" like marble, but it is not.

Burns on cultured marble will look yellow-brown like a cigarette burn. If this is what you have, there is not much remedy for it. You'll have to call a professional that may be able to sand it out and re-apply a the protective coat.

Real marble is very heat resistant although, it is possible that prolonged heat could cause damage. Most likely it would not look like a "burn" but more like a dull spot.

If you have real marble, try this:

Buy some steel wool pads in the "00", "000" and "0000" grades.

Use the "00" to sand the area until any blemishes are removed. Continue to sand the area with the finer grades until you get a polish on the surface.

This probably won't get the finish as shiny as the rest, but it may be acceptable.

Marble polishing powder (buy online or at a hardware store) may help as a final finish.

Good Luck,
Ryan
