Marble Care For Vinegar Stain

QUESTION:
Please advise me on how to remove a vinegar stain from a pickle jar that broke on a white marble floor. Thanks!
ANSWER:
Pat, I imagine you cleaned it up pretty quick so the damage is likely mild. What you have is "etching" and not a true stain.
A stain occurs when a substance is absorbed into the marble creating a darker spot.
Etching occurs when an acidic substance like vinegar/pickle juice contacts the marble. The acids corrode the marble creating a dull and/or lighter spot.
People often call them "water-spots" or "glass-rings."
Marble care for removing etch marks depends on what type of finish (honed/tumbled or polished) the marble floor has.
It's likely honed/tumbled, but if polished (glossy/shiny), then you'll need to use a good marble polishing compound like
SCP- Marble Polishing Paste which I find works the best.
It's easy to use. Basically just rubbing the paste on the spot to restore the color and shine.
However, if the finish is honed or tumbled you'll need to follow the step-by-step instructions in the
Removing Etch Marks Manual.
This process is also fairly easy and you can do it yourself cheaply.
Good Luck,
Ryan
