How To Clean Marble Tubs - Lysol Damage

QUESTION:

I cleaned the top of my marble bath tub with Lysol, it left a yellow stain on it. How do i get it out, and what is the best cleaning solution for marble?

ANSWER:

The Lysol is acidic and too harsh to use for cleaning marble. Really, nearly all common or name-brand household cleaners are too harsh and will damage marble by etching.

So, you should use only products safe for cleaning marble like those we recommend.

Specifically, these are the best products for cleaning marble bathrooms.

Etching is chemical corrosion.... physical damage to the marble surface leaving a dull and discolored spot.

This is not a stain, which confuses many people. There is nothing to "get out" or "remove".

It's a matter of marble repair, but the method depends on the type of finish and the severity of damage.

On polished (shiny) marble use the ETCH REMOVER / Marble polishing paste, which is made specifically for this issue and is very effective.

On honed marble follow the instructions in the Removing Etch Marks e-book.

Or call in a cleaning marble and maintenance professional. A pro will get the best results on a honed marble surface, but much more expensive than the DIY methods provided in the above e-book.

Also, if the marble is severly etched and is rough to the touch you may end up having to hire a pro. Once the damage is too severe more specialized treatment is required for which the Etch Remover product is not designed.

But severe etching is pretty rare, so you should be able to solve the issue yourself.

And then just use the right products for cleaning marble from now on.

Good Luck,
Ryan
