Honed Marble Flower Pot Stain

by Sheila
(Granbury, TX)

QUESTION:

I have let a flower pot stain my honed bianca venatino marble tile. Of course, I am desperate on how to clean it. What a terrible mistake on my part. Thanks for any help.

ANSWER:

Sheila, you'll have to apply a poultice to get that stain out.

A poultice is a paste that is applied to the stain for a few days to draw out the stain. Some stains or harder to get out than others and you may have to repeat the process several times.

Here's how:

  1. Buy some baby powder and 12% Hydrogen Peroxide (online or at a beauty supply store). The drug store kind is only 3% and too weak.

  2. Mix the powder and peroxide to make a paste the consistency of peanut butter.

  3. Using a wooden or plastic spatula, apply the poultice to the stain 1/2 inch thick with a 1/2 inch border

  4. Cover the poultice with plastic wrap and seal the edges with masking tape.

  5. Let the poultice sit 48 hours, then remove the plastic, but don't touch the poultice... it needs to dry thoroughly for another day.

  6. With the wooden or plastic spatula, scrap the poultice off the marble countertop.

  7. Repeat process until the stain is gone.

Leaving the poultice on longer will not necessarily work better. The peroxide works on the stain and the drying action draws it out into the poultice. Once the poultice is dry, it is done for that round.

Good Luck,
Ryan
