Filling Granite Pits

Harbor Stone

Harbor Stone

QUESTION:

I have used a penetrating sealer on my granite, but what can I use as a surface sealer to fill in all the pits in the stone?

ANSWER:

Thanks for the picture! I'm assuming that you are not asking about the strange holes I see (what's going on there... are more cut-outs to be made or some appliance installed?).... but rather about small pits that sometimes occur in the surface of granite. You shouldn't have many.

You can fill small pits with an adhesive product made by "Akemi" that comes as an epoxy (generally for outdoor use) and polyester formulations. It's a glue that is used by many installers to secure the granite slab to your cabinets and also at the seams.

Akemi can be mixed in a variety of colors to match your granite countertop. I would recommend that you have the installer come back and fill the pits rather than do it yourself, especially if you've just had it installed.

You can get more info about Akemi products at Akemina.com. They sell via distributors. Also, you can find Akemi products at sculpt.com.

Good Luck,
Ryan
