Etched Marble Vanity Top

by Joan Q
(Hastings, Nebraska)

QUESTION:

I have a marble vanity top that I think has been "etched" by cosmetics and toothpaste. What can I do to bring back the shine and is there a over the counter product to "seal" it to prevent further "etching"?

ANSWER:

To repair etch marks and bring back the shine use SCP: Marble Polishing Paste. This paste is made specifically for this purpose and works perfectly on all but the most severe cases for which you'd have to hire a professional.

To prevent etching you need to keep acidic foods, drinks and bath products off the marble by using coasters, decorative trays and such.

It only takes a few seconds contact for an acidic substance to etch marble.

Sealing guards against stains. Stains are substances that have absorbed into the marble pores below the surface. Etching is corrosion of the marble... nothing is absorbed.

Etching and staining are two completely different issues and "sealing" has nothing to do with etching and will not prevent etching.

Also, you can't clean marble with common name-brand household cleaners. Most of these will etch the marble, so use only products safe for cleaning marble.

Good Luck,
Ryan

I highly recommend Stone Care Pro Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but found Stone Care Pro is the most reliable and effective and cheaper too!
