Dull Marble Vanity Tops

by Dave
(Kennesaw, GA)

QUESTION:

Two of our bathroom marble vanity tops have gotten dull. What can we do to polish them back and look like new?

ANSWER:

The only reason a marble vanity would get dull all over is from using the wrong, damaging cleaning products.

Marble is reactive to acidic foods (juice, coffee, soda), acidic bath products (mouth wash, shave cream, perfume, etc.) and to most common brand-name cleaners.

Damage from foods and bath products will usually cause rings and spots on marble. But if the marble is dull all over, then it's almost always from cleaning the marble with damaging products.

You should only use products safe for cleaning marble.

The reaction that makes the marble dull is corrosion called "etching." It's like a chemical burn that eats into the marble.

Etching will result in dull, light-colored spots that look like ghost stains. Or the marble will just be dull and light colored all over.

Luckily, etching on polished marble can be cured and the marble finish restored using SCP: Marble Polishing Paste.

This paste is made specifically to remove etch marks on marble. It's very easy to use and you'll see results right away.

There is one caveat.... if your marble has been severely etched (which can occur with repeated cleanings using the wrong cleaner) then the surface could be too damaged for the paste to help much and you'll have to call a marble maintenance pro.

However, most household etch marks are not severe (rough to the touch) and are easily repaired using the paste. And it's far cheaper than calling a pro, so best to try first.

Good Luck,
Ryan

I highly recommend Stone Care Pro Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but found Stone Care Pro is the most reliable and effective and cheaper too!
