Dull Marble Spot Under Sink

by Steph
(Portsmouth, RI)

QUESTION:

I have rain forest green marble floor. I have a bath towel mat under the sink. I went to clean the floor and noticed a dull spot under the center of the mat. This is where you stand to look in the mirror. What do I do. I used a marble cleaner/sealer but that didn't do anything. Any suggestions?

ANSWER:

How big is the spot? How long ago was the marble floor installed? And when you write "dull" you mean "not shiny" correct rather than darker or stained?

The reason I ask is... most likely the dull area is the result of wear and tear and friction between the rug and the marble caused by frequent standing in that spot.

In other words... the polish has been worn away. The polish on marble comes from grinding and abrasion by machines, not from a cleaner, sealer or other chemical.

When a polished marble surface is etched from contact with acids it can often be restored with marble polishing cream if the resulting dull spots are mild. In this case I'd imagine you'll require a professional to re-polish the area.

A professional is expensive, so if the area still feels smooth and is just dull you may have some luck using this ETCH REMOVER / Marble Polishing Paste.

If the area is discolored, that's a different story. If so, ask another question with as many details as possible and I'll help with the solution.

Regards,
Ryan
