Dull Marble Coffee Table

by Price
(Alabama)

QUESTION:

I moved into a new house yesterday and my mother-in-law came over to help me clean. I believe that she wiped my marble couch table with either Faboloosa (some type of purple cleaner) or windex. Now my table has no shine to it and appears to be stained. How can I get get the shine back?

ANSWER:

Well shoot! Whatever cleaner it was "etched" the marble. Etching is physical surface damage caused by exposure to acidic and sometimes alkaline chemicals.

Unlike granite, marble and other calcite-based stones like travertine and limestone react with acids causing the marble to be corroded or eaten away.

Windex and such products are no good for cleaning marble. Use only water and a tiny bit of soap or even better... a specially formulated marble cleaner.

To get the shine back you may have to have the marble professionally re-polished. Ouch! The shiny polish on marble or any stone surface is not due to the application of some chemical or spray. It comes from grinding, friction and buffing.

Most often etching is not severe, so you'll likely be able to fix this and restore the shine using the ETCH REMOVER / Marble polishing paste.

Might as well try the polish and if that doesn't do the trick, call a pro.

Good Luck,
Ryan

I've used many good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but discovered others more reliable, effective and cheaper too!
