Dull Marble Bathroom Sink Top

QUESTION:
We purchased a green marble bathroom sink top for our bathroom. The top is looking stained and dull (it's only 1 year old). I have, unfortunately, been using the usual cleaning products I use on everything else in the house (soft scrub, etc.). I also use a lot of aersol hairspray. I am wondering if it is the cleaning supplies and/or the hairspray this is dulling the shine -- and, how can I go about getting the shine back? Please help!!!
ANSWER:
Peggy, hairspray can cause some problems, but it's almost certainly the cleaning products that have made the marble dull.
Marble is sensitive to acidic foods, drinks and harsh cleaning products (which are most of those you buy at the store).
Cleaning marble with these products will corrode the surface eating away the shiny layer leaving the marble dull and sometimes lighter in color.
It's called
etching. Now if the marble is pretty rough to the touch, you may need professional restoration. Severe etching could occur with repeated use of damaging cleaners.
But most often you can restore the shine and color using
SCP- Marble Polishing Paste made specifically for this purpose.
Of course, it's far cheaper than hiring a pro and likely will do the trick for you. It's very easy to use too. It's really a must have for long-term marble maintenance.
Once you get the shine back be sure to use only
products safe for cleaning marble & granite.
Good Luck,
Ryan
