Deep Chips In Marble Table

QUESTION:
Hello again. The worst possible nightmare has occurred. Slippery hands allowed a heavy object to drop onto our marble table causing a deep dent. While our table is very large and thick, the dent nevertheless also penetrated the surrounding surface to appear cracked, although not loose.
It measures 2cm in total circumference, but only 1cm for the actual indent. We are absolutely flabbergasted. We read elsewhere to manually, but gently, rub area with 1,000 grit sandpaper, then proceed to use silicone to fill in the gap after carefully washing with plain water and drying completely.
Since we are in absolute horror, we need to check with you before further damage is caused, because, we trust this site and the information provided.
What would be your evaluation? Thank you again for your assistance, experience and patience.
ANSWER:
Lys, using a color matching caulk can work (it will fill the dent and may be reasonably inconspicuous), although I don't think it's the best solution.
I think you should call a marble restoration pro and/or local installers to come take a look.
You want someone who is experienced filling chips and pits with acrylic/polyester glue (Akemi, Tenax), which is used to bind stone and fill cracks, chips, etc. It will bond very well with the stone, cure to be very hard and can be color matched, but chances are that there will always be a slight blemish.
Good Luck,
Ryan
