Curling Iron Burn on Vanity
QUESTION:
Is there any product that can strip the burn off of the counter top then re polish or seal it? The color is beige and egg shell.
ANSWER:
Most commonly this happens on "cultured" marble and not on real marble.
Cultured marble vanities will often have a built-in sink and if you look in the cabinets at the underside it will simply be gray in color.
Once cultured marble is burned it is difficult to repair. Cultured marble is basically a plastic mold with a colored pattern and protective gel coat applied.
Burns ruin the gel coat. It may be possible to sand the area down and re-apply the gel coat, but you'd most likely still have a blemish.
I couldn't tell you how to do this properly (we don't deal with cultured marble), but to have any chance at a satisfactory repair you'll need a pro experienced in cultured marble.
If you do have real marble, then removing burn marks is really a job for a professional to restore it to previous condition.
You can try using a bit of diluted bleach and soft brush. That may help lighten the color some. It will also etch (make it dull) your marble though.
Also, more aggressively you can try sanding the burn with 400 grit or 240 grit paper. This may remove all the burned and discolored marble, but it will leave an obvious dull spot and possible depression.
So, if all you want is to remove the brown/orange burn color, but don't care if the marble looks dull and/or scratched after, then the DIY steps above will do it.
I don't recommend this. You should call a marble restoration professional.
Now, if you use the bleach and brush... you get lucky and it does remove all the burned color, then you restore the area etched by the bleach and get the shine and color back with
SCP- Marble Polishing Paste.
Good Luck,
