Curling Iron Burn in Marble Vanity

by Larry Keip
(Waunakee, WI, USA)

QUESTION:

Hi, my wife accidentally tipped her curling iron onto our bathroom marble counter top & left what looks like a cigarette burn. Is there any way to "lift" this mark out of the surface? Thanks!

ANSWER:

Yes, you can get the burn mark out, but it may require a marble restoration professional.

A burn of course is physical damage to your marble. The damaged/burned marble will need to be removed and then the surface "restored" to match the rest of the vanity top.

I'm assuming this is a polished marble. The shiny polish on your marble is the result of grinding/finishing with diamond abrasives. The burn has damaged this polished layer.

Removing the burn will necessarily also remove the polished layer leaving a dull spot. Re-polishing this dull spot will require using special abrasives.

You cannot do this. Re-polishing marble requires the skill and knowledge of an experienced professional.

Having said that you may be able to get "acceptable" (but not perfect) results doing it yourself with the procedure outlined in Cleaning Marble Secrets our complete marble maintenance manual. Much cheaper than hiring a pro.

If the vanity is honed, then your in business. It probably won't require a professional and you'll be able to get good results yourself with the step-by-step instructions in our guide.

Good Luck,
Ryan
