Cleaning Yellow Marble Lamp

by Tracy
(New Preston, CT, USA)

QUESTION:

Hi There, I recently purchased a very old marble lamp which is yellowed either by stains or age. Is there anything which I can clean it with which would lighten the color?

ANSWER:

Does the marble lamp have a polished surface?

If so, then I'd use 12% hydrogen peroxide (buy at a beauty store or online at our products page) and soft bristle brush. If you can temporarily remove the electric parts, soaking the marble lamp in a hydrogen peroxide bath would be good too.

If the marble is NOT polished (matte surface) then you could try using a dilute bleach solution. Soak or spray on and scrub. Too much bleach will ruin the polish.

Also, depending on how much design detail, nooks and crannies the lamp has you could just sand the surface with 000 grade steel wool pad. Or if you really want to get into some fresh marble then use 80 grit steel sand paper. Finish with 240 and then 400 grit paper to get a fine finish.

Of course, don't sand if the marble is polished... you'll ruin the polish.

Good Luck,
Ryan
