Cleaning Tumbled Marble Cat Pee Smell

by Dawn
(Niagara on the Lake, Ontario)

QUESTION:

Hello I have tumbled marble in my entrance way and my cat has urinated on it in several spots. I used a gentle cleaner for marble but the smell is in the marble. It is a beige colour with caramel in it. What can I try?

ANSWER:

First, I'd try using a baking soda and water poultice. Mix baking soda and water into a paste like peanut butter. Apply the poultice to the spots and cover with plastic wrap. Tape the edges down with masking tape and leave it for two days.

Remove the plastic and leave the poultice until it is hard. That should help. You could also just continue to sprinkle a little baking soda on the area to absorb the remaining smell.

You may also consider using 80 grit metal sand paper on the area to remove the surface layer of marble. You can then blend the area with 240 grit metal sand paper and foot traffic will do the rest.

If the smell is still strong, mix a little vinegar in water (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) and spray the area.

Now vinegar may etch the marble, but since it is tumbled marble you probably won't notice too much... if at all. In fact, usually cat/dog urine will etch marble. Sanding out the etch marks like described above is the remedy for that too.

Good Luck,
Ryan
