Cleaning Marble Vanity Wood Dye Stain

by Lisa
(White Rock, BC, Canada)

QUESTION:

Hi There, I need advice on removing a stain from my white Italian Carrara marble counter top. Water dripped though a dark wood wicker basket, which leaked onto the marble countertop and left a brown stain from the dye. Are there any solutions to get the stain out?

ANSWER:

Why yes there is Lisa!

You'll need to mix and apply a poultice. A poultice is a paste made with an absorbent substance like talc or baby powder, diatomaceous earth or even paper towels and a particular chemical that is determined by the type of stain you have.

For dyes in white marble you'll need 12% Hydrogen Peroxide. You can get this at a beauty supply store or order online from our products page. The kind you buy at the drug store is too weak at only 3%.

Make A Poultice

Mix the hydrogen peroxide with talc powder into a paste similar to peanut butter. Apply the poultice to the marble stain 1/2 inch thick with a 1/2 inch border. Cover it with clear plastic wrap and seal the edges with masking tape. Let is sit for 24 hours. This will give the hydrogen peroxide time to absorb and work on the dye.

The next day remove the plastic wrap, but don't touch the poultice. Let it dry out until it's hard... another day. During this time the poultice is drawing the stain out of the marble.

Once dry, scrap off with a plastic or wood spatula and clean with hot water. Hopefully the stain is gone... if not, then repeat the process as many times as needed until it is.

Let me know the results by posting a comment using the link at the bottom of this page.

Good Luck,
Ryan
