Cleaning Marble Vanity Installation Residue

QUESTION:

Marble color is light tan with thin veining that forms a rather minimalist pattern. The installers filled joints where the backsplash panels met with a light tan, heavy paste like material that hardens, but still has a sticky quality when razor blading off residue on the surface of the vanity.

I tried a little Goo Gone but it seems inadequate to the task. Also rubbed on a 409 granite and stone cleaner with the same disappointing result. It did shine-up a bit, but when you view it aslant so the sheen is most obvious, you can still see portions of the marble that do not shine as brightly as portions of the vanity top that did not get the filler material on it. What to do; what to do.......Don

ANSWER:

While you may be seeing the residue when looking at an angle, it may also be that the marble is now etched and dull from using the Goo Gone and/or 409.

You can't use just any cleaner on marble. Marble is sensitive to acidic foods/drinks and most cleaning products. Even some that say "for stone" are not to be trusted. Many companies have jumped on the bandwagon as granite and marble have become more popular and common slapping new labels on basic cleaners.

When these products contact the marble they corrode the shiny surface layer leaving a dull spot.

Anyway... just letting you know because you may have to address etching as well.

Here's what to do...

Scrape off all the material you can with a razor blade as you've done already I believe.

Then clean using pure acetone from the hardware store and a soft-bristle brush or nylon pad. Acetone is pH neutral and won't damage.

That should remove any residue left from the caulk or epoxy that was used.

If you still have dull spots, it's probably etching from using the wrong/damaging cleaning products.

To restore the shine to these areas you'll need to use SCP- Marble Polishing Paste.

Good Luck,

I highly recommend Stone Care Pro Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle, MB) but found Stone Care Pro is the most reliable and effective and cheaper too!
