Cleaning Marble Table Top Water Rings
QUESTION:
A marble table (gray with white streaks) we bought last month now has large, ugly water spots that won't come out. The advice online is confusing. Thoughts?
ANSWER:
Yeah, I agree that there is a bunch of confusing and conflicting information online about stone care and in particular marble maintenance.
Not hard, but several myths about marble have been perpetuated so much that many (even some pros) think they're true.
Anyway... the "water-rings" are actually "etch marks" caused by contact with acidic foods/drinks like coffee, soda, juice, wine, etc. and not from water.
Marble is sensitive to acids and also to harsh alkaline cleaning products (most of the common household cleaners in your store). The acids and harsh chemicals corrode the marble, destroying the shiny polish and leaving a dull and/or discolored spot.
It's not a stain... a little bit of the marble itself has been removed essentially.
To remove glass-rings/etch marks you'll need to use a special compound like
SCP- Marble Polishing Paste.
This paste is easy to use and very effective removing etch marks and scratches to restore the shine and color on your marble.
Also, be sure to use ONLY products made for cleaning marble.
And always use coasters, trivets, mats, etc. to avoid contact with damaging chemicals.
Good Luck,
Ryan
