Cleaning Marble Floor White Wine Spot

by Sharon Gardner
(Houston, Texas)

QUESTION:

I had a party not to long ago, and someone had dropped a glass of white wine on my marble floor. I focused on picking up the glass before mopping up the wine. After cleaning up the mess, the next day, I noticed a big spot on my marble floor where the white wine was.

I have tried everything to get the spot up, but it will not clean. What suggestions do you have for me to clean that area of the floor, it is very noticeable. Thank you for any advice you can give me. Sharon

ANSWER:

Sharon, wine is acidic and acidic foods and drinks will "etch" marble. Etching is a form of corrosion, that eats into the marble causing a dull and sometimes discolored spot. Common issue with marble.

It is not a "stain," has nothing to do with sealing and cannot be "cleaned" off... hence your frustration. It is physical damage to the marble.

It can be repaired though! The solution depends the type of finish on your marble floor (polished or honed.)

You'll find a complete explanation and step-by-step instructions to remove/repair the spot in our Removing Etch Marks manual.

It's a bit of a process, but it's fairly simple and it won't cost much. So relax, you should be able to restore it back to normal.

Good Luck,
Ryan
