Cleaning Marble Fireplace Bottom

by Nancy Burgess
(Gahanna, Ohio)

QUESTION:

I have a client that has burned places on the marble that's at the base of her fire place, she asked me how to or what to use to get the burned marks off? Nancy

ANSWER:

Burns can be tough and it depends on if it is polished or honed.

If it is polished (or was), it's likely that the burn has ruined the polish and cleaning it off may also. So if the marble is polished and she wants to restore it to a polished state, you'll need to hire a pro.

If she just wants to clean the soot and smoke stains off, then use a soft bristle brush to dry-scrub the area first.

Next spray on some MB-9 Cleaner and scrub some more.

If it is still stained you will have to sand away the damaged marble with 120 grit metal sand paper then blend with 400 grit metal sand paper and 0000 grade steel wool.

Again, if the marble is polished, the above procedures will likely dull the polish (the sanding for sure) but it will work fine for honed marble.

Good Luck,
Ryan

granite countertop cleanerI highly recommend MB Stone Care Products to maintain all your marble, stone and granite countertops and floors in optimal condition. I've used other good products (Stone Tech, Miracle) but found MB Stone Care is the most reliable and effective.
