Cleaning Marble Bathroom Countertops Burns & Stains
by Pam
(Texas)
QUESTION:
I purchased a house that has marble countertops in all the bathrooms. The house was built in the 70's and I am led to believe the tops are original. In one bathroom there are cig burns on the top and black yuk around the drain of one of the sinks. I can not get it clean. I use the clorox bleach wipes to clean the top and sink, is that okay? What can I do to remove the stains, give the top a better looking finish and how do I take care of it moving forward. Thanks, Pam
ANSWER:
Pam, are you sure the countertops are real marble and not "cultured" marble?
These are problems that are very common with cultured marble and if you put bleach on real marble it would etch the marble making it dull.
Are the sinks "built in?" Is the counter just gray on the underside? If so, you have cultured marble which is basically marble dust formed into a mold with colored and protective coatings like plastic.
There isn't much you can do about the burns and stains. Once the protective layer is ruined the damage is permanent. I'd be easier and possibly cheaper to just replace the tops.
Now, if you do have real marble you can get the stains and burns out, but there are several variables to consider and it requires multi-step methods. Luckily, they are fairly simple.
