Cleaning Granite Before Sealing Granite

QUESTION:
My contractor applied the sealer to the counter top without deep cleaning with acetone. I knew that the surface was dusty and needed cleaning but instead he wiped it out lightly with a rag. The granite is Madura gold. I know it could be too late. Should I Accept the job? Is there a way to remove sealer, and do it over, would result be any different?
ANSWER:
Cleaning the surface of stone right after install and prior to applying a sealer is the standard method to remove any glue or other goo, dirt and grime, etc.
However, using acetone is not a
must. If the surface is relatively clean and maybe only dusty, then wiping down with hot water and/or using a good product for cleaning granite like
Stone PLUS Cleaner is fine.
You just want to allow enough time for the any moisture on the surface to completely dry out before applying a granite sealer.
If you don't notice anything weird happening with the way the surface looks and the surface is smooth without anything stuck to it, etc., then there's nothing to worry about. No need to strip it off.
Good Luck,
Ryan
