Choosing A Marble Slab

by Chris Fischer
(St . Paul, MN)

QUESTION:

What do I look for when choosing a slab? What are the little holes? Should they be filled? What about large veins that appear to be filled with clear epoxy? How do I care for marble? I'm new at this and all I really know is that it is beautiful.

ANSWER:

Most/all of your questions will be answered as you read through the different pages on this website. Of course, read through the pages on "marble" and "care and cleaning" and only use cleaning products formulated for marble. I recommend MB Stone Care Products .

Choosing a slab: is as simple as picking one you like. Marble has natural veins, which are nothing to worry about unless you see cracks. If you see large veins filled with epoxy (??) then I would not buy that slab. Although many quarries will "resin" the marble which may fill in some holes, gaps or veins in areas.... perfectly normal.

The "holes" are found in travertine... a form of limestone. Yes, they should be filled or they will simply collect dirt.

You'll need to hire a fabricator/installer, so I'd spend some time finding someone you like to work with and they will take you around to the different stone warehouses to help you pick out a slab.

Good Luck and have fun with your project!

Ryan
