Can I Use Vodka for Cleaning Marble?

by Karen Whissen
(Santa Rosa, CA)

QUESTION:

Can I clean my natural marble shower/floor with vodka? Marble is white beige tone. 20 years old.

ANSWER:

Ha! Are you getting back on the wagon Karen? Or maybe you own a distillery! Just kidding of course....

You certainly win the prize for "Most Surprising Question", but why would you want to clean with vodka?

True, vodka can work as a cleaner for some things, however most vodka is still too acidic for cleaning marble and will etch (cause corrosive damage, discolored marks, dull spots) your marble.

Some top shelf vodkas like Stoli, Grey Goose and Kettle One are more pure, less acidic - more pH neutral, but far more expensive than a more effective, easier to use and marble safe marble cleaner like we recommend.

Most other common (and uncommon!) brand-name household cleaners are just too harsh for marble. Granite is a little more forgiving, but marble is a different animal, so you need to stick to the cleaners made specifically for marble.
